The Daily Marker 30 day colouring challenge #9

What:

Day nine of the second Daily Marker 30 day colouring challenge. A more CAS card than yesterday’s, but technically trickier. And yes, I do still have the stinky cold and no, I don’t know why I chose today to try partial double die-cutting.

Inspired by:

I had tried partial die-cutting before, but not partial double die-cutting; then YgarridoTeacher on Instagram mentioned it and pointed to an Ellen Hutson video on the technique.

How:

Having a snuffly cold and a non-working brain made this a lot harder than it needed to be. I worked out where I wanted the baseline of the die-cutting to be and drew a pencil line to make sure it was straight and then used the stamp and circle die to get the exact positioning. I did a faint third-generation stamp of the rocket where I wanted it to cross the baseline and then partial die-cut the rocket. Then I positioned the circle die and partial die-cut that too. A quick cut with a sharp knife along the baseline and the cut was complete.

I coloured over the faintly stamped rocket with Copic markers, coloured the flames, stamped the sentiment and rounded the corners.

For the background I blended some Distress inks and dotted stars over it using white and silver gel pens.

I attached the front panel to the background using foam tape — this could easily have turned into a shaker card but I decided not to on this occasion — and then the oopsy happened. I put plenty of strong double-sided tape on the back ready to be mounted to the card base; what I didn’t do was check which way up the card base was on my desk. So I carefully stuck it on upside down.

Once I’d stopped cursing myself I came up with a plan to fix it. There was o way it could be peeled apart without wrecking it so I took my sharp knife and turned it into a matt by cutting a narrow border around the main panel. It looked a bit odd having both layers white, so I carefully coloured the bottom layer with a black brush pen. Then I made a new card base from pearlised dark blue card, which nicely matched the window background, and assembled it the right way up.

Lessons Learned:

Always triple-check that you have the card base the right way up before sticking anything to it.
